Doodle's Narcolepsy Turns Excitement Into Sudden Naps
A dog named Toast has canine narcolepsy, causing him to fall asleep instantly when excited by things like dinner or play.
A Doodle named Toast falls asleep at least 100 times a day. His sudden naps are caused by canine narcolepsy, a nervous system disorder where excitement is a primary trigger.
According to his owner Laura, ordinary joyful moments can lead to immediate sleep. Playing in snow, seeing his dinner, or wrestling with his canine sister Laney can overwhelm Toast with happiness, prompting his body to shut down. Laura told The Dodo that when her Doodle becomes especially excited, "he may simply need a brief break before continuing whatever he was doing."
Sometimes this happens during meals. Toast can be so excited for dinner that he takes only a few bites before his head droops toward his bowl. Laura monitors him closely, repositioning his face if he falls asleep near his food until he wakes to finish eating.
Understanding the Condition
VCA Animal Hospitals states narcolepsy is a nervous system disorder causing an animal to abruptly lose consciousness and appear deeply asleep. Muscles go slack, and rapid eye movements associated with REM sleep may occur.
The organization notes episodes can end suddenly with sound or physical stimulation. While narcolepsy itself is not considered painful or life-threatening, owners should recognize episodes to prevent injury from sudden collapse.
For Toast's family, this understanding allows them to keep him safe. They watch for his triggers and ensure his spontaneous sleeping spots are secure, letting him enjoy his days without his condition defining them.
Life With a Sleepy Sibling
Perhaps nobody adapts to Toast's rhythm better than his sister, Laney. Toast is obsessed with her and wants to be wherever she is. Their enthusiastic play sessions often pause when Toast needs one of his characteristic naps.
He simply sleeps briefly before resuming play, sometimes settling directly on top of Laney. Laney shows remarkable patience, allowing him to lie on her, nibble her ears, or press against her while she relaxes. "Toast has to be wherever Laney is. He is obsessed with her," Laura explained, noting Laney lets him lie on her and chew her ears while she rests.
This patience gives Toast the freedom to be himself around his best friend, whether wrestling or suddenly snoozing.
Despite constant interruptions, Toast does not seem bothered. He wakes and returns to the activity that made him happy, be it playing, exploring, or eating. His life is packed with playtime, good food, adventures, and affection. His narcolepsy may briefly interrupt happy moments, but once awake, Toast jumps straight back in.
