Maltese Duo Proves Non-Traditional Breeds Can Excel in Dog Sports
Rubina Pak and her Maltese, Hayden, are breaking barriers in the dog sports world, showcasing the capabilities of non-traditional breeds.
Rubina Pak's life was forever changed when she met her first Maltese, Parker. After being bitten by a dog as a child, Pak had a deep-seated fear of dogs. However, Parker's sweet and loving nature helped her overcome her phobia, and she eventually got her own Maltese, Hayden. Pak's journey with Hayden has been nothing short of remarkable. From competing in dog sports to providing comfort and healing, Hayden has brought new experiences into Pak's world. Pak first got interested in dog sports with Parker, who earned titles in Agility, Obedience, and Rally. Hayden, on the other hand, has taken the spotlight, becoming Pak's first RACH-titled dog. Hayden's journey in dog sports began when he was just 9 months old. Pak started him in Rally classes, and to her surprise, he quickly picked up the skills. Hayden's first official training was in beginner obedience classes, and he went on to earn his Rally Novice title before turning one year old. He even qualified for the AKC Rally National Championship while still a puppy. The 2025 RACH Invitational was Hayden's and Pak's second time competing on the major stage for Rally. Although they were unable to enter any additional Rally shows leading up to the competition, they practiced rally exercises to the best of their ability. Pak's goal was to finish all three courses and get the breed medallion for top dog, but they ended up getting a little more than that. They got the medallion and placed 4th in the toy breed category, earning a nice ribbon. Pak says they enjoyed the entire experience, meeting new people and running into familiar faces. Hayden's love for the audience's applause was evident, and Pak admits that he clearly loved hearing the clapping as they entered the ring. Beyond dog sports, Hayden has also made appearances on TV, including the 2023 National Dog Show in Philadelphia, where he was seen on TV for groups. He even filmed an Amazon Prime Day commercial with Megan Thee Stallion in 2024. Pak's approach to training Hayden is unique, taking into account the Maltese breed's limitations. She doesn't push him too far, recognizing that the breed isn't traditionally suited for dog sports. Instead, she focuses on short training sessions and takes breaks whenever Hayden shows signs of tiring. Hayden's achievements are a testament to Pak's dedication and Hayden's natural talent. As a double champion in Conformation and Rally, Hayden is well on his way to becoming the second Maltese to achieve Agility Grand Champion (AGCH). Pak hopes to continue competing with Hayden in Rally, aiming to be invited to RACH again for 2026 and represent the Maltese breed. Pak's journey with Hayden is a reminder that every dog, regardless of breed, has the potential to excel in dog sports. With patience, dedication, and the right training, even non-traditional breeds can achieve greatness.
